In 2013, Sawan Masih was accused of blasphemy following a dispute in Lahore.
A mob subsequently attacked Joseph Colony, a predominantly Christian neighborhood.
Homes were looted and burned.
Years later, Sawan Masih was acquitted.
But an appellate judgment could not undo the destruction already inflicted on his neighbors.
Jaranwala
On 16 August 2023, accusations against Christian men in Jaranwala triggered one of Pakistan’s most internationally reported episodes of anti-Christian mob violence in recent years.
Churches and Christian homes were attacked.
Families fled.
People who had never met the accused were placed in danger because they shared their religion.
Collective Punishment Without a Court
The logic of communal violence is fundamentally incompatible with individual criminal responsibility.
Even if an allegation against one individual were ultimately proven, it could never justify attacking:
their neighbor,
their neighbor’s child,
their church,
or hundreds of unrelated families.
Why Communities Flee
People do not wait for flames to reach their own house.
When rumors of an approaching crowd spread, families may escape immediately.
This displacement can leave homes and possessions vulnerable to theft or seizure.
